How to follow post-dated cheques until they clear

Last reviewed: 2026-10-25

In short

A cheque is a promise, not money. ORCAD gives every cheque a direction (received or written) and a status: pending, deposited, cleared, bounced or cancelled. Nothing reaches a custody, a sale or the cash flow until the cheque clears.

The life of a cheque

Each cheque records its number, bank, amount, issue date, due date, project and party.

  • Pending: in hand, or handed over. It can still be edited or cancelled.
  • Deposited: a received cheque has been paid in.
  • Cleared: the money arrived. A custody line is recorded; a received cheque for a sale pays the sale.
  • Bounced or cancelled: the cheque is followed up without ever having counted as money.

Cheques for installments

For a unit sale, one action can create a received cheque for every open installment that has no open cheque yet. Numbers count up from the first and keep their leading zeros.

What the dashboard shows

The cheques screen shows due and bounced counts at the top, and the home dashboard carries them too. Expected money is counted by the installments themselves, so open cheques are never counted twice.

Common questions

Why does a cheque not appear in the cash flow?
It has not cleared. Only cleared cheques reach a custody, a sale or the cash flow.
Can many cheques be created at once?
Yes, for a sale: one received cheque for every open installment, with numbers counting up.
Can a cheque be edited after it is deposited?
Editing and cancelling are only possible while the cheque is pending.
